Mrs. Caroline Amanda Hitchcock passed away at her home on West street Saturday, January 3, 1925, at the age of seventy-five years.
Caroline Amanda Owen was born in Painesville, Ohio, March 10, 1850. At the age of five she moved with her parents to Warrenville, Illinois, where the Owen family made their home until 1870, when they came to Clay county, Iowa, taking up a homestead here.
She was united in marriage to Stephen Hitchcock May 4, 1871, after which they made their home on his farm north of Spencer until they were compelled to move to Spencer because of failure in health, where Mr. Hitchcock passed away September 4, 1914.
She leaves to mourn their loss, three brothers and one sister, two brothers and two sisters having preceeded her in death. The living are Edmund K. of Lawrence, Kansas, James C. of Ashtabulu, Ohio and Daniel H. Owen of Spencer, and Mrs. M.B. Swift of near Spencer.
Caroline Amanda Hitchcock was one of the sweetest and best women whom it has been the privilege of her intimate friends to know. Coming as an early settler to this state, she had the firm courage of her convictions and faith in the good and simple things of life which the rugged country demanded of its pioneers. Her death is a sad bereavement to those who loved her dearly.
Funeral services were held at the Cobb Funeral Home at two-thirty Monday afternoon in charge of the Rev. Thos. B. Collins, pastor of the Methodist church. Burial was made at Riverside cemetery. Coy Swift, a nephew of Ogden, Iowa, and Roy Swift and family of Langdon, Iowa, were able to be present from away.
