Valentine Hammes, 1846-1916

Valentine Hammes, a member of the business firm of V. Hammes & Son, died at his home in Rossie, Iowa, Thursday morning, May 11th, 1916. Valentine Hammes was born In Nittel, on the Rhine, Germany, Oct. 18th, 1846, where he was reared and obtained his early education. In 1860 he went to Paris, France, and worked at his trade as a marble cutter for eight years. In 1868 he came to America and landed in Keokuk county, Iowa, where he lived for a number of years and entered into farming. In 1876 he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Paulus at Sigourney, Iowa. To this union five children were born, three sons and two daughters. In the spring of 1883 he came to Clay county and was a resident ever since. One son and the mother preceded him in death. In the year 1910 he went to Europe and spent the summer at Saarbucken, German, with his only brother and other relatives and friends. He was a kind father and did whatever he could to make his children good and true citizens. He never grew old, only in years. His heart was young and he was a broad
minded and public spirited citizen, noted for his honesty and fairness in all dealings. He had many warm friends who are saddened by the news of his death. Mr. Hammes was a loyal member of the Catholic church, belonging to the Royal Mission.

He leaves to mourn his loss two sons, Nick and Johnnie; two daughters, Mrs. Margarete Brown and Miss Mary and one little grandson, Leapold H. Brown, all of Rossie and one brother, Michael Hammes of Saarbucken, Germany, besides a number of other relatives. Rev. Father Minort of Sutherland preached, the funeral services at the Sacred Heart church In Spencer and interment was in the Riverside cemetery.
