Ella Marcellus Burgin, 1854-1928

Mrs. Ella Marcellus Burgin, a resident of Spencer for the past fifty nine years, passed away at her home, 804 East Second street, Saturday morning, March 3, at 1:30. Mrs. Burgin had a heart attack two week ago Sunday but her condition seemed somewhat favorable until Thursday, February 23, when she had a paralytic stroke. That with other complications resulted in her death. Mrs. Burgin was unconscious from the time of her stroke until her death. At the time of her death Mrs. Burgin was 74 years old.

Miss Ella Marcellus, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.D. Marcellus, was born November 29, 1854, at Boltonville, Wisconsin. In 1869 she moved with her parents and brother Willis, to Clay County, Iowa, and settled on a farm just outside the city limits of Spencer. Mr. Marcellus built a large mill on his farm. She remained with her parents until 1877 when she was united in marriage to Levi C. Burgin. To this union was born four children, three daughters, Mrs. Mary Estling of Twin Falls, Idaho, Mrs. Bessie Taggart of Spencer and Ethel who passed away at the age of 18 months, and one son, Royal, who died in 191O, at the age of 23 years. Mr. and Mrs. Burgin and children made their home on east Second street, where Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Jones now reside, and later built them their home, 804 East Second street, where Mrs. Burgin resided until the time of her death. Mr. Burgin preceded his wife in death December 15, 1915. Mrs. Burgin was a member of the Free Baptist chruch but transferred her membership to the Sacred Heart church of Spencer.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Mary Estling of Twin Falls, Idaho, Mrs. Bessie Taggart of Spencer, nine grandchildren and a great many friends.

Funeral services were held Monday morning, March 5, at the Sacred Heart church of Spencer, Rev. Father M.C. Wendl,officiating. Burial was made in Riverside cemetery.
