Funeral services for Willard Spangler, 85, of Everly, were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly. The Rev. Jim Mueller officated. Mr. Spangler died Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at the Spencer hospital.

Casket bearers were Jack Clark, Gary Christofferson, Arvin Schmidt, Rod Thomsen, Walt Goeken and Harold Harson. Honorary beareres were Byron Wittlesey, Norman Neilsen, Robert Kelley and Richard Kirksey Sr.

Military services were conducted by the American Legion, Everett Boyles, Jr., Post #414 of Everly. Burial was at Lone Tree Cemetery in Everly.

Warner Funeral Home Spencer was in charge of arrangements.

Willard George Spangler, the son of George Henry and Esther E. (Benner) Spangler, was born Dec. 16, 1915, in Wesley. His childhood years were spent in Everly where he received his education, later graduating from Everly high School.

Following his schooling, he entered the military and served with the Army Air Force during World War II from 1942, until his honorable discharge in 1947. He was a POW during the war and among his honors received during his military career was the Distinguished Flying Cross for his bravery in combat and two bronze stars.

He married Maurine M. Hauber on Sept. 9, 1937, in Spencer. following their marriage, they continued to live in Everly, where he worked for the U.S. Postal service for 30 years. He was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church in Everly, where he served as a choir member for 14 years and also served on the church council. He was also an active member of Everett Boyles Jr. Post #414 American Legion in Everly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister who died in infancy and a brother-in-law.

Mr. Spangler is survived by his wife; one brother, Eugene and his wife, Clyte Spangler of Granbury, Texas; one sister, Verneil Christensen of Spencer; other relatives and friends.
