A funeral service for William "Bill" Lawson, 67, of Spencer, will be held today, Oct. 2, 2001, at the First Congregational Church beginning at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Tonna Parson will lead the service. Mr. Lawson died at his home on Friday, Sept. 28, 2001.
Casket bearers will be William Newgard, Bradley Lawson, Stephanie Wedel, Bonnie Newgard, Sara Lawson and Matthew Wedel. Military services will be conducted by Glen Pedersen Post #1 American Legion of Spencer. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer, Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
William "Bill" Claude Lawson, the son of Lorin and Thelma (Brinkley) Lawson, was born Jan. 20, 1934, in Dickens. His childhood years were spent in the Greenville and Rossie areas where he received his education, graduating from Rossie High School.
He married JoAnn Rogers on June 21, 1953. Following their marriage, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957, obtaining the rank of corporal. Following his honorable discharge, he worked for Spencer Construction until going to work for Spencer Ready Mix which he managed for 30 years. He was a member of the Greeville Congregational Church and served on the church board. He was very active in the Spencer community as a member of the Masonic Lodge, Moose Lodge, American Legion and the Old Car Restoration Club. He was a past member of the Iowa Ready Mix Assocation and served on its board of directors for nine years.
He was preceded in death by his father and one sister.
Mr. Lawson is survived by his wife; two daughters; Francie and her husband Randy Newgard of Laurens, and Lori and her husband, David Wedel of Dawson, Ill.; two sons; Steve and his wife, Pam of Fort Dodge, and Scott and his wife, Becky, of Alleman; six grandchildren; his mother, Thelma Lawson, of Spencer; two sisters; Jeanette Hardersen of Sioux City, and Jackie and her husband, Bill Peters, of Othello, Wash.; two brothers; Mark Lawson and his wife, Susan, of Clarkston, Wash., and Tim Lawson and his wife Edna, of Greenville; other relatives and friends.
