John M. Unrau, the son of Henry and Florence Slessor Unrau, was born Nov.12,1911, in Grundy County, Iowa. He received his early education in Reinbeck, Iowa, where he graduated from high school. He later attended Iowa State Teacher's college, Iowa State and University of Iowa.

John married Sue Russell on March 21, 1936, in Illinois. Following their marriage, he taught school in Harlan, Iowa, before joining the Navy during WWII, where he was a Navy Lieutenant in the Pacific Area for two years. Following the military, he taught in several schools in Iowa and did part time constrution work. He was a member of the 1st Congregational Church of Spencer, a 46 year member of the American Legion, member of the Evening Shade Lodge, Spencer Shrine Club and the Abu Bekr Shrine Club in Sioux City, Iowa.

Mr. Unrau passed away in his Winter home in Brownsville, TX on April 19, 1991 at the age of 79.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Bernice Emmert. He is survived by his wife, Sue, of Spencer, three sons and their wives, John and Marlys of Arnolds Park, IA, Jerry and Patricia of Houston, TX and James and Mary Lou of Wickenburg, AZ., 6 grandchildren, one sister, Ardath Johnsone of West Layfayette, IN. other relatives and friends.
