Sue Elizabeth Unrau, the daughter of Walter and Carrie Russell died after a lingering illness on June 28, 2004. She was born in Des Moines, IA, where she received her early education. She earned her B.A. from Union College in Lincoln, NE, with majors in English and Home Economics after which she taught for one year in Van Cleve, IA.
She met and married John M. Unrau in 1936, who was from Reinbeck, IA. They lived in Letts, IA, for three years. After their first son was born they moved to Harlan, IA, where their family was completed by the birth of two more sons. Sue did secretarial work and bookkeeping while raising her family. After retirement, they wintered in Brownsville, TX and during the summer months they traveled in their motor home to MN and Canada until John's death in 1991.
Sue was a member of the First Congregational Church in Spencer, IA and Evening Shade Chaper #116, Order of Eastern Star, Social Order of Beauceant, Shrine Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. Sue's hobbies were fishing, camping, playing bridge, reading, gardening and crossword puzzles.
Sue's husband, John, her parents, one brother and two sisters preceded her in death. Her three sons and wives survive her: John and Marlys Unrau of Spencer, IA, Jerry and Pat Unrau of Spring, TX. and James and Mary Lou Unrau of Colleyville, TX. Her brother, Tom Russell of Lafayette, IN, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews also survive her.
Sue's sons, as well as her entire family wish her well on her journey to a better place. Everyone who knew Sue will sorely miss her soothing hands and warm heart.
