Norma Hagedorn Dethlefsen

Norma Hagedorn Dethlefsen, the daughter of Hans and Sena Hendricksen Hagedorn, was born March 22, 1909, in Rossie, Iowa.

Norma married Willard Dethlefsen on May 25, 1930, in Rossie, Iowa. Following their marriage, they lived on a farm near Greenville, until 1938, at which time they moved to the Royal community, where they farmed for many years. In 1958, she began teaching at Royal High School and upon her retirement from teaching, she and Willard wintered each year in Mesa, AZ. During this time, as an active member of the Church of Christ, Norma conducted over five thousand Bible correspondence courses with people in Africa. After Willard’s death, she resided in Nashville, TN for several years before moving to Kansas.

Norma passed away at the Aberdeen Village in Olathe, Kansas on Saturday, October 12, 2002 at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard; her daughter, Carmen Bang of Miami, FL and her son, Merlyn Dethlefsen (Colonel, retired) of Arlington, TX.

Surviving are her children: Karen Malcom of Belleville, IL; Peter (Will) Dethlefsen of Belleville, IL; Mariette (Mary) Allen and her husband, Bill of Olathe, KS; and Norma (Jean) Brown of Nashville, TN; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Cecilia Dethlefsen of Greenville, IA and Lola Dethlefsen of Spencer, IA; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 18, 2002, at the Warner Funeral Home Chapel in Spencer, Iowa. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer. Donavon Johnson will officiate.
