OBITUARY

Daniel B. Van Houten was born, April 4, 1904, at Homer, Nebraska and departed this life, May 24, 1962. He came to Everly, Iowa in 1924 and worked on various farms. He was married to Mrs. Eva Van Houten, November 29, 1929. They lived on a farm near Everly for a number of years and regardless of his failing health, Mr. Van Houten was active in farming the past eleven years and retired in 1962, just a few months prior to his death.

He became seriously ill with cancer, and January 29, he was confined to the Spencer Municipal Hospital where he was a patient at the time of his death.

Although he suffered greatly, he was very patient and always glad to see his relatives and friends. Dan was faithfully cared for, but to no avail. He will be greatly missed. He leaves his loving memory to his wife, Eva; three sons, Ronald of Linn Grove, Leland at home near Everly and Major Philip Van Houten of London, England; one daughter, (Loretta) Mrs. Gerald Kepler of Estherville and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Barney, unknown; Harry, who has made his home with the family for thirty-three years; one sister, Mrs. Jessie Bellvile of Parris, California; three half brothers, George Van Houten and Clifford Van Houten of Spencer and Frank Van Houten of Bloomfield, Nebraska; and one half sister, Alice of Sioux City, also a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by one son Louis Van Houten, who passed away September 29, 1952.

The following poem is published in memory of the deceased:

What Was His Life?

Not-How did he die?
But-How did he live?
Not-What did he gain
But-What did he give?
These are the units
To measure the worth
Of a man, as a man
Regardless of birth
Not-What was his station?
But-Had he a heart?
And-How did he play
His God-given part?
Was he ever ready
With a word of good cheer,
To bring back a smile,
To banish a tear?
Not-What was his church?
Not-What was his creed?
But-Had he befriended
Those really in need?
Not-What did the sketch
In the newspaper say?
But-How many were sorry
When he passed away?
