Peggy Rae Wells was born on July 3, 1935, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harley Zahrt of Spencer, Iowa. She attended school in Spencer and graduated high school in 1953. She was baptized in the Christian Church in Spencer in 1946, when she was 10 years of age. Before her marriage, she was employed at Montgomery & Ward and in the summertime, at the pool. February 25, 1955, she was united in marriage with Max W. Wells at the First Christian Church. For a while after her marriage, she was employed at the Lynch Drug Co. and Spencer Daily Reporter.

To Peggy and Max Wells were born three children: Terry Lynn, October 14, 1955; Rodney Alan, February 4, 1957; and Marc Evan, April 28, 1958. Peggy was one to put her family first in first place as a devoted wife and mother.

On Wednesday morning, April 27th, [1960], Peggy Wells and two of her sons, Rodney Alan and Marc Evan, lost their lives as a result of an automobile accident just north of Spencer. Survivors include her husband, Max of Spencer; and a son Terry, at home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Zahrt of Spencer; three brothers, Wayne Zahrt, North Hollywood, California; Dennis and Charles of Spencer, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

At the time of their deaths, Peggy was 24 years of age, Rodney was three, and Marc was almost two.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Spencer, April 30 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Kenneth Kershaw officiating. Pallbearers for Peggy Zahrt were Keith Pullen, Bob Campbell, Orville Krukow, Leo Rutledge, Kenneth Bishop and William Fuller, all of Spencer. Pallbearers for Rodney and Marc were: Gerald Hagberg, Danny Guettman, Tommy Evjy, Larry Burk, Johnny Roti, Steve Nissen, Doug Stauffer and Bob Rausch, all of Spencer. Interment was made in the Riverside Cemetery.
