Darlene Ione Bowers was born October 23, 1917 in Rossie, Iowa to Leslie and Kathryn Zahrt Upward. Her childhood years were spent in the Rossie community and it was there that she received her education. Following graduation from high school, the family moved to Spencer in 1935.

Darlene was married to Roy Bowers on Jan. 1, 1936 in Greenville and for one year following their marriage, they continued to live in that area. They then moved to Spencer and later to California where they lived for three years during WWII. They returned to Spencer for a short period of time and in 1948 they moved back to California. In 1975, they moved to the Lakes Region and it is there they have since made their home. Mrs. Bowers died on June 6, 1978 at the Dickinson Memorial Hospital in Spirit Lake, at the age of 60 years, 7 months and 13 days. She was preceded in death by her mother, and one infant son, Leslie William Bowers.

Darlene is survived by her husband, Roy of Milford, 1 son, Ronald Bowers and his wife, Gerry of Arnolds Park; 4 grandchildren; Guy, Ronna, Troy and Sherry; her father Leslie Upward of Atascadero, CA; 1 sister, Shirley, Mrs. Jack Goddard of Atascadero, CA; other relatives and friends.
