November 5, 1957
The Osceola Tribune, Osceola, Iowa

S. Eugene Hart was born on September 5, 1864, and passed away on October 31, 1957, at the age of 93 years, 1 month and 26 days, at the home of his sister, Jennie in Osceola, where he had made his home for the past seven years. He had lived in Clarke county all his life with the exception of two years in Kansas, during his early childhood.

He was the eldest of seven children of Samuel and Emeline Miler Hart. His father died in 1879 leaving most of the care of the family to Eugene and Ed, who were then 14 and 13 years of age respectively. They never married, but devoted their lives to the family.

Eugene experienced the hardships of the pioneer farmer and could remember when there were no sidewalks around the court house square in Osceola. He followed farming until his retirement in 1947. In his declining years he enjoyed visiting with his relatives and friends and delighted in telling of his early day experiences. To know him was to love him.

Those preceding him in death were: his parents, two brothers, Edd and Warren, and one sister, Mary Ramsey.

The survivors are: one brother, Jake of Leon; two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Sweeney and Mrs. Della Proudfoot of Osceola; three nieces, Mrs. O.L. Edwards and Mrs. Water Vawn, both of Osceola, and Mrs. Della Day of Austin, Minn.; four nephews, Jude and Harley Ramsey, Glen Hart and Paul Proudfoot of Osceola, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, at the Webster Funeral home with the Rev. David E. Mathews officiating. Emil Rinderspacher sang "Beyond the Sunset" and Beautiful Isle of Somewhere accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Amy Harlan.

The pallbearers were: Vern Day, Wendell Beeman, Eldon Barnard, Gerald Edwards, Joe Ramsey and Leslie Woodall. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.
