Hezikiah Howell Turner was born at Cochranton, Pa., February 8, 1842, and died at Tabor, Iowa, May 25, 1917, aged 75 years, 3 months and 17 days. At the age of fourteen he removed to Monmouth, Illinois, where he resided until 1885.

On February 13, 1873, he was united in marriage with Fannie Umbarger at Princeton, Illinois. To this union were born ten children, five of whom survive their father, three of them dying in infancy, a daughter some six years ago, and a son one year ago last February.

The five living children are: Mrs. Eva Blackburn of Tabor, Iowa, with whom her beloved parent was making his home at the time of his death; Mrs. John Jones, Murray, Iowa; Mrs. Geo. Jones of Osceola, Mrs. Jesse Jones of Afton, Iowa, and Asa, also of Murray. Besides these he leaves a step-son, J.M. Case of Omaha, Nebraska, Twenty-seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In 1885 Mr. Turner removed from Illinois to Missouri, where he lived for three years, when he moved to Grand River, Iowa, which was in 1888. He came to Clarke county in 1893, where he has since resided with the exception of two brief periods, which were spent in Nebraska. Upon returning from Nebraska the last time they went to Murray, where in February 1916, his wife preceded him to the eternal home. This calamity, along with the physical disability of total loss of eyesight, and worry concerning the present world situation, in view of the world war, preyed heavily upon Mr. Turner’s health.

For fifty-two years he suffered semi-blindness, and the last two and one-half years, except the last six months, of life were spent in total physical darkness. He was sick but a few days, when the call came to enter the realm where “all is light,” and there is no dependence upon the fleshy orb.

Mr. Turner faithfully served his country during the Civil War, enlisting as sergeant in the 153rd Illinois Infantry, Co. A, and was in the service between three and four years.

He was a kind husband and a loving father.
Upon the death of the wife, he went to Tabor, Iowa to live with one of the above mentioned children, Mrs. Eva Blackburn, at whose home he died. Mr. Turner is survived by only one sister of thirteen brothers and sisters, Mrs. Josephine Crosby, of Dawson, Minnesota, who is very feeble, at the age of 85. His last and youngest brother died on Thursday at his home in Harlan Illinois, just one day before his brother died on Friday.

Brief services were held at the home in Tabor by Rev. R.M. McBride, after which the body was brought to Osceola for the funeral service proper, and burial.

These services were held at the Christian church last Sunday afternoon, at 2 o’clock, by Rev. LeRoy Munyon, after which interment was made in Maple Hill cemetery beside the form of his departed wife.
