Mrs. Martha Jane Barnard, mother of County Assessor Lela Barnard, died at her home on South Main street on New Year's day. She was 89 years old.

Mrs. Barnard was one of Clarke county's better known and loved elder women. She was born in Davis County and came here with her parents while a child. This has been her home ever since. She was married to T. E. Barnard, who preceded her in death in October 1927.

Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Bernard, five of whom survive their mother. They are: Carroll and Lela at home; Ross of Jamison, Garrett of Des Moines, and Paul of Ames.

Services were held at the Webster Funeral Home at 2:00 o'clock this (Thursday) afternoon. Burial was by the side of her husband at the Jamison cemetery.
