54-Year-Old Fremont Township Man Had
Lived Entire Life In County;
Pioneer Family Member

Last rites for Ross Barnard, prominent Fremont Township Farmer, were held at the Webster funeral home Wednesday, July 29. Rev. Lester Hall, pastor of the Chariton Methodist church, officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill cemetery. He was 54 years old at the time of his death, Sunday, July 26.

The following obituary was read at the service:

Ross Franklin Barnard, son of Thomas E. and Martha Jane Barnard, was born near Jamison, Iowa, on July 12, 1899, the youngest of five children.

In the fall of 1908, the family moved to Osceola, where Ross attended grade and high school, graduating with the class of 1917.

The following year he enrolled in the Iowa State College at Ames, enlisting in the Students Army Training Corps, a branch of the army.

Later he engaged in farming near Otis, Colo., for several years, where he met his future wife. On August 14, 1933, he was married to Mary Goldfinger of Denver, Colo., who was a teacher of languages in the Lone Star high school. The following year they moved to the Barnard homestead near Jamison, where they have since resided.

To this union three children were born, Robert Eugene, Ellen Margaret and Zina Ann, who with his beloved wife survive him.

He is also survived by three brothers, Paul F. of Ames, Garrett of Des Moines, and Carrol of Osceola, and one sister, Lela also of Osceola.
