Wilma Ethel Layton Weaklend, daughter of Bertie Carl Layton and Lillie Ethel Pettis Layton, was born Feb. 4, 1937, in Clarke County. She passed away Dec. 26, 2007, at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 70.

Wilma attended Clarke County Public School and later got her GED. She worked as a homemaker and drove the Southern Iowa Trolley.

On Dec. 28, 1956, Wilma was united in marriage to Raymond L. Weaklend. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Ramona Ray, Debra, and Steven. Ramona Ray passed away Feb. 1, 1958, at the age of 4 months 6 days. Raymond passed away March 17, 1973, leaving Wilma to raise her two children on her own. She lived in the Osceola area her entire life, with a short residency in Spickard, Mo.

Wilma was baptized in the Methodist Church in Liberty Center. She spent her time loving and worrying about her family. She loved making plastic canvas items to decorate her home. She loved sparkly prisms in her window to reflect the sunlight. She collected lead crystal and rabbits and was very proud of her collections.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond; daughter, Ramona Ray; grandson, Steven Michael Weaklend; sisters, Mildred Schultz and Ruby Farr; brothers, Vernie Layton and Carl Layton; also several nieces and nephews.

Left to cherish her memory are daughter, Debra McCloney and husband Ron of New Virginia; son, Steve Weaklend of Lacona; grandchildren, Jeff McCloney of Humeston, Ashley McCloney of New Virginia, Alan McCloney of Humeston, Dana McCloney of Omaha, Neb., Kyle Weaklend of Osceola, Nicholas Hendrickson of Osceola, Nicole Hendrickson of Osceola; great-grandchildren, Danika McCloney of New Virginia, Tyler McBride, Hailey Hendrickson, Harley Ray Hendrickson, Cassius Henry and Ryan Phillips, all of Osceola; sisters, Barbara Schnieder and husband Stan of Osceola and Alice Reed of Liberty Center, a host of nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. She will be greatly missed and loved by all who knew her.

Funeral services were held Dec. 29, 2007, at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, the Rev. Jody Rushing officiating. Recorded musical selections were "When I Get Where I'm Going," "One More Day" and "Go Rest High on That Mountain."

Casket bearers were Kyle Weaklend, Alan McCloney, Jeff McCloney, Nick Hendrickson, David McKinney, Darren Reed, Cody Henry and Darl Reed.

Interment was in Bethel Chapel Cemetery in Clarke County.
