Vera Lucille Black Weaklend, the daughter of Clara and George Clarence Black, was born Sept. 9, 1918, in Lucas County near Woodburn and died June 13, 1996, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. She was 77.

She married Loren Kenneth Weaklend on Nov. 20, 1935, and they spent their life together farming in the Woodburn area.

Mrs. Weaklend was a homemaker and member of Bethel Chapel Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986; brothers, Bernard, Wayne and Robert Black; a sister, Nina Slone, brothers-in-law, Everett Weaklend and Glennie Weaklend; and sister-in-law, Velma Weaklend.

Mrs. Weaklend is survived by her son, Edward Weaklend and his wife, Sheryl Weaklend of Woodburn; two granddaughter, Rhonda McClaran and her husband, Brian McClaran, of Woodburn and Teresa Christensen and her husband, Wendell Christensen Jr., of Algona; four grandchildren, Chris and Nicole McClaran and Jason and Jacob Christensen; three sisters, Hazel Welch, of San Clemente, Calif., Lois Culbertson of Chariton and Frances Coffman of Elburn, Ill.; a brother, Wayde Black of Chariton; four sisters-in-law, Eula Weaklend and Daleth Haltom and her husband Raymond Haltom, all of Osceola and Ruby Black of Luther Park Care Center in Des Moines and Arlene Black of Chariton; many nieces and nephews and friends.

Services for Mrs. Weaklend were June 17 at the Mosher Funeral Home in Chariton with the Rev. Gearold McElwee conducting the service.

Casket Bearers were Stanley Black, Glen Black, Roger Black, Larry Ratliff, Irvin Allen and Darrell Slone. Honorary bearers were Jason Christensen, Jacob Christensen, Chris McClaran, Nicole McClaran, Interment was in the Bethel Chapel Cemetery in rural Clarke County.
