This week marks the passing of another of the pioneer mothers of Clarke county. Following a brief Illness, Mrs. C. T. Ayres, 82, died at the home of her son, Romeyn Ayres, east of Osceola, on Friday, January I8.

Mrs. Ayres was one of the outstanding women of her time. She was active in the religious and social life of the city during the many years she and her husband lived In Osceola following their moving from the farm in 1907.

Eleanor, daughter of Daniel R. and Elizabeth Raymond, was born July 20, 1852, at Raisin, Michigan. When twelve years of age she came with her parents to Iowa, settling at Eddyville, and in 1867 came to Osceola to reside.

This city at that time was the terminal of the Burlington railroad. Her father, active in the development of the town, built and operated the first flour mill. Grain was brought in ox wagons from a distance of fifty miles.

She was happily united in marriage on February 18, 1879, to Charles T. Ayres who resided east of Osceola. To them were born three children—Lizzie, Romeyn and Raymond. They made their home on the farm until 1907 when they came to Osceola to reside.

She was highly esteemed and was a regular attendant of the Presbyterian church. Her husband departed from this life in 1925. The next year she and her mother went to Long Beach, California. After her mother’s passing, she resided with her daughter, Mrs. George R. Squier at Berkley, California. In June, 1933, she returned to make her home with her son, Romeyn.

On Monday, January 14, she was stricken with pneumonia and passed away Friday, January 18, having lived to the age of 82 years, 5 months and 28 days.

She is survived by her children, Mrs. Lizzie Squier of Berkley, Calif., Romeyn of Osceola, Iowa, and Raymond of Los Angeles, California, and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church on Monday, January 21, at 2 o’clock. Interment was in Maple Hill cemetery. The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. Byrns.
