Romeyn B. Ayres came home to Iowa Saturday, December 10, 1955. He was laid to rest by his fellow Masons of Osceola lodge in the family plot in Maple Hill cemetery. With his baby son, Gordon, his father and his mother, and his grandparents, Romeyn adds another link to the chain of four generations of Osceola heritage.

Romeyn was born on his father's farm August 22, 1881. Here he grew to manhood, married his childhood sweetheart and neighbor, Lenora Blake, Dec. 28, 1904, and lived there the greater part of his life. The land that had been purchased from the government by his grandfather in 1867 was relinquished into other hands in 1950, and Romeyn moved into Osceola to subdivide and build on Dewey street. About 1952 he turned his eyes west to spend his last few years in California near the ones who loved him.

Romeyn was the son of Charles T. Ayres and Nellie Raymond Ayres, who were married here in Osceola Feb. 19, 1879. A man of sturdy character, fixed ideals, and clean living – Romeyn was a good neighbor. He was a student of the soil, its needs and its bounties. When many went to have good fellowship amongst themselves, Romeyn was wont to be at home on the farm, alone with the animals that he loved, and could call by name.

Although he remained close to the land so many years, he read and dreamed of travel, and several times took trips to different sections of the country. One of his greatest pleasures was a trip in 1951 to visit cousins in the East and South.
He leaves these cousins now: Daniel V Raymond of New York, Mrs. Clara Warner of Hyattsville, Maryland, Mrs. Kitty Kelley of Lakeland, Florida, and Mr. Frank Rice of Auray, Colorado.

In the immediate family, Romeyn leaves his daughter, Mrs. Kenwood B. Rohrer and twin grandsons, Thomas Ayres Rohrer and William Ayres Rohrer of Los Angeles. Also in Los Angeles, he leaves his brother Raymond Ayres, husband of Clara Baldwin Ayres, and their children, Mrs. Carl Bohnhof, Mrs. Leland Jennings, and Dr. Daniel Ayres.

Now that his work is finished, Romeyn has found peace and rest in the land of his fathers. His quiet perseverance and his understanding heart have earned for him an enduring and a loving memory.
From Micah, chapter 6, verse 8. "He hath showeth thee, O Man. what is good! And what doth the Lord require of thee. But to do justly, and to love mercy. And to walk humbly with thy God."

Romeyn passed on in Los Angeles, Dec. 3, 1355, after an illness of several months. Services were conducted Dec. 7 for family and friends in California, after which Romeyn came home to Osceola, escorted by his daughter and her husband.

Final rites were conducted from the Webster funeral home, Saturday. December 10, 1955 at 2 p.m. the Rev. O. J. Rundus officiating, with the Osceola Masonic lodge conducting the Masonic service at the Maple Hill cemetery
