A.M. Griffin as born in Mercer county, Pennsylvania, April 16, 1848, and died in Clarke county, Iowa, January 31, 1925, aged 76 years, 10 months and 14 days. He was one of the few remaining pioneers of this county. He came to Clarke county in 1867 and had been active in the affairs of this vicinity for nearly half a century. From Pennsylvania he moved with his family to Streeter, Illinois, in his early childhood. Following the death of his mother, when but a lad, he went to live with his sister at Tipton, Iowa, and soon after reaching young manhood returned to Streeter. As a lad he learned the carpenter trade and after coming to Clarke county he worked at his trade for several years.

On May 12, 1870, he was married to Sarah Johnson, daughter of F. W. Johnson, one of the early day pioneers here. Soon after their marriage Mrs. Griffin contracted a disease that the physicians believed would be benefitted by the change of climate in Kansas. Accordingly they moved there, but she died seven years later on August 26, 1877. Three children were born to them, all of whom are living. They are: Effa Griffin of Pasadena, Calif.; Mrs. A. A. Eggleston of Los Angeles, and Mrs. C. E. Jones of this city.

On November 11, 1879, he was married to Electa May Barrows. To this union was born six children, three of whom survive their father. George G. Griffin lost his life while fighting fire in Osceola on November 2, 1917; Mrs. Grace Hogan died on January 7, 1914; Ed Verne died October 14, 1909. The living children are Alfred C. Griffin of Osceola; James Pearl of Knowles, New Mexico, and Otho of this city. Mrs. Griffin died on July 30, 1905.

On August 28, 1908, he was united in marriage to Alma Cave who has been a devoted companion since that time.

A brother and sister survive the deceased. They are John Griffin of Adeline, Illinois, and Mrs. Minnie Murdock of Streeter, Illinois.

Mr. Griffin was converted in early life and has been an active member of the M.P. church here for many years. He was a keen student of biblical affairs and it is said that he had read the entire bible twenty four times.

By his passing to the great beyond the family circle loses a loyal brother, a devoted husband and father, and the community a most worthy citizen. To those who mourn his departure is extended the sincere sympathies of a host of friends and neighbors.
