Died, on Friday, June 6th, 1884, at his residence in this city, M. T. Oliphant, aged 28 years, 10 months and 17 days, of quick consumption, complicated with an affection of the heart.

The deceased was born in Monongahela county, Va., on the 20th of July, 1835, and came to Clarke county in August 1864. Here he grew up on a farm and upon attaining a suitable age, attended college at Indianola. He afterwards engaged in business here for a time in the employ of J. M. Beard, with whom he remained until about two years ago when he went into business on his own account. He was conspicuous for his unwearied industry and excellent business habits, and was highly esteemed wherever known. He was a member of the M.E. Church, of this city, and his life was that of a devoted and zealous Christian.

About three years ago he was married to Miss Reed, who with one child, the fruit of the brief but happy union, survives to mourn her early and untimely bereavement.

His illness began on the 5th of February last, and was the result of a severe cold contracted while absent on a business trip to Des Moines. It was borne with patient and hopeful courage, and he confidently expected to recover up to within a few hours of his death. His mourning wife and orphaned child have the sincerest sympathy of the community in their great affliction.

The funeral look place on Sunday, the 8th inst., the services being conducted at the late residence of the deceased by Rev. Mr. Horswell, of the M.E. church. The remains were interred in the Osceola cemetery in accordance with the rites of the Independent Order of Odd Follows, of which he was a member. A large number of friends followed the remains to their last resting place.
