James Clarence Graves, 73, native resident of Clarke county and former educator, died early Sunday at the Clarke county hospital after suffering a heart attack on the previous day. Mr. Graves had been in ill health for about two years but his death was unexpected.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the Webster Funeral Home with Rev. H G. Arink, pastor of the Presbyterian church, officiating Burial will be in the Maple Hill cemetery here.

The son of Elon and Florence Chapman Graves, he was born Feb 4, 1885, in Osceola and had lived all but about 35 years of his life in this community. He was educated in the Clarke county schools and later became a teacher.

On Dec 17, 1912. he was united in marriage with Sarah Logan at Grinnell.

Mr. Graves served as secretary of the Clarke county Selective Service Board during World War II. He prepared data for Clarke county's section in the "Who's Who" for Iowa a number of years ago.

A member of the Presbyterian church, he was superintendent of the Sunday School for a number of years and' also served on the Cemetery Board. Mr. Graves was a member of the South Denver Lodge No. 93, A.F.&A.M., and of the Eastern Star In Osceola.

Surviving are his widow, two sisters, Mrs. Amy Ryan of El Paso, Texas and Mrs. Lucille Pullen of Des Moines; three brothers, Gilbert of Los Altos, Calif., Joseph of El Paso, Texas, and Charles of Dallas, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Walter and Arthur.
