Samuel Baker, one of Clarke county's oldest, if not. the oldest, pioneer men, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. E. Smith in Liberty township Friday. He was 98 years old and had been a resident of the county since 1858.

Services were hold from BethelChapel Monday afternoon with Rev. Jesse C. Spencer of Des Moines officiating. Miller Funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Burial was by the side of his wife in Bethel Chapel cemetery. Pallbearers were six nephews: Wald Baker, Elvin Baker, Raymond Baker, Glenn Baker, Harry Baker and Paul Goodrich. All his pallbearers served for Mrs.. Baker five years ago. Music for the services was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Lynn.

Samuel Baker, youngest of son of seven children, was born to Jacob and Honor Baker in Indiana county, Pennsylvania, Nov. 16, 1848, and departed this life Oct. 17, 1947 at the age of 98 years, 11 months and one day. His own mother passed away when he was two years old. With his father and stepmother he emigrated to Clarke county, Iowa in 1858 when he was nine years old. He grew to manhood in this county and was one of Clarke county's oldest pioneers.

He was united in marriage to Lettie Ann Harrison July 24, 1870. To this union was born nine children, seven sons and two daughters. His companion preceded him in death in 1942. Four children, William, Frank, Walter and Grace, also preceded him in death. Those left to mourn his departure are as follows: Sherman and Alonzo of Exeland, Wisconsin, Silas of Chariton, Iowa, J. M. of Liberty Center, Iowa and Mrs. A. E, Smith of Woodburn, Iowa. A number of nieces and nephews, 35 grandchildren and 102 greatgrandchildren and thirteen great great-grandchildren living, besides other relatives and a host of loyal and faithful friends. Uncle Sam, as he was usually called, was the last of his immediate family taken.

He was very patient and courageous to the last, singing hymns and often quoting passages of scripture and requesting reading of same; also prayers. Ministers always prayed with him when calling on him. He was a real believer in the Almighty God who doeth all things well.

He was converted at the age of 44 and had often said that he had regretted not serving his Master in his younger years. He was a lifelong member of the U.B. church which he joined in 1892. He served his church well as long as he was able.

Ho was possessed with a strong spiritual courage, and went through many a hardship, where lesser courage would have failed. Possessing a heart filled with love for his follow beings.

He was tenderly cared for in the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. E. Smith and husband the past 17 years, with his other children and grandchildren doing what they could to lighten the burden.
His last illness was of a short duration, one week and one day.
