Walter R. Puckett.

The funeral services in the presence of the remains of Private Walter Puckett were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Webster in the City Park in Osceola in the presence of a large assemblage of patriotic citizens at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon.

Private Walter Rolland Puckett, M. S. T., Unit 409, of the A. E. F., was born in Douglas county, Illinois, January 30, 1883, and died in France October 10, 1918.

He was the son of James R. and Lydia M. Puckett. He moved with his parents from Illinois in February 1892 and settled with them at Groveland, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. On March 1, 1903, the homestead was sold and the family moved to Missouri. They lived there but one year, then returned to Iowa and settled near Weldon. Rolland remained at home till 1918, when he went to Montana to enter land.

When at home in 1914 he attended revival meetings in Weldon, conducted by Rev. Butler, and during these meetings, he confessed Christ as his Savior.

In 1915 he finished his schooling as a mechanic in Minneapolis, Minn.

Being in Montana at the time of his enlistment, he enlisted at Great Falls. From there he went to Spokane, Wash., where he was sworn into service, June 1, 1918, as a mechanic for his country. He was transferred to Sam Houston, Texas and from there, in August he was transferred overseas to France. In the latter part of September, he was taken sick and was sent to hospital No. 9, just behind the Argonne front. He died October 10th, of lobar pneumonia fever, and was buried the next day in an American cemetery overlooking Vanbecourt Muse, France.

His mother preceded him in death March 15, 1914.

He leaves to mourn their loss, his father, one brother and five sisters, as follows: his father, James R. Puckett, of Osceola, Iowa, his brother, John M. Puckett of Bozeman, Mont., and his sister, Mrs. Josephine Hollowell of Farmer City, Illinois; Mrs. Myrtle Nelson of Davenport, Iowa; Mrs. Miriam Cassity of Purden, Mo., Miss Millie Puckett of Osceola, Iowa, and Mrs. Edith Wilson of Osceola, Iowa. There are many other relatives and a host of friends who mourn his early departure from this life.

He laid down his life for this country, and a John J. Pershing says, "His name will ever remain fresh in the hearts of his friends and comrades, and the record of his honorable service will be preserved in the archives of the American Expeditionary Forces."

Card of Thanks: We desire to express our sincere thanks and deepest appreciation to our many friends for their kindness and sympathy which they so freely extended to us in our recent hours of sorrow and bereavement. We also wish to thank the Legion boys and singers for their kindness and one and all for the beautiful floral offerings which brought so much comfort.
James R. Puckett and Family.
