November 3, 1949The sad news was cast over our little city Sunday afternoon by the sudden death of J.B. Powers lifelong man of Clarke county. He was very well and favorably known here, having for many years had the coal and ice business. He was also mayor for several terms.
He was the only son and child of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Powers. His wife preceded him in death. He leaves two children, Mrs. Minnie Cook and Carl Powers, both of Murray. The latter and his wife had resided in Mr. Powers home for the last several years, where he was cared for. He also leaves five grandchildren who all mourn his departure.
Jake, as he was usually called, was a good neighbor and friend. He did many acts of kindness in his quiet and unassuming way. He passed into the beyond from a heart attack Sunday afternoon. Funeral services were held from the Watts funeral home Tuesday of last week at 2 pm. And burial made in the Murray cemetery beside his wife.
He was past 87 years of age. To the daughter and son and other relatives we wish to join in with his many other friends in extending sympathy.
