Church There Yesterday

Last rites for John Nicholas Ries, life-long resident of the Murray vicinity, were held at the Murray Church of Christ on Monday, April 12 with Rev. O. E. Richardson officiating and Watts Funeral service in charge. Burial was in Union cemetery in Madison township. After a long period of ill health, he died Thursday, April 8, 1954, aged 80 years and five months.

A son of Henry and Catharine Ries, he was born in Madison township on November 5, 1873, the eldest of a family of eight children, three boys and five girls.

On February 7, 1900, he was married to Jessie Gaumer, also of Clarke county. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ries, four of whom survive their father. A son died in infancy.

Mr. and Mrs. Ries spent their entire married life farming in Clarke county except for a few months. On February 7, 1950 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

During the ministry of Rev. E. W. Killion, in 1916, he joined the Murray Church of Christ and until ill health curtailed his activities five years ago, was active in the affairs of the church and his community.

He is survived by his wife and five children: Mrs. Oma Little of Murray, Roscoe A. Ries of Des Moines, Oren C. Ries of Sheridan, Oregon, William A. Ries of Murray and Mrs. Idema Blaser of Murray; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Hickman of Murray, Mrs. Clara Myers of Peru and Mrs. Linnie Hall of Osceola, and one brother, Charlie Ries of Des Moines.

Pall bearers at the service Monday were Boyd Iiams, Herman Hartman, Warren Johnson, Charles Riggle, Curtis BUrgus and Lloyd Morgan. Music was by Clarence Wetzel, Mrs. Gerald Johnson, Mrs. Stanley Watts and True Woods with Mrs. C. W. Arnold, accompanist.
