Philip Alexander, one of the old time residents of Osceola, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D. W. Webster, Monday, aged nearly sixty-four years. Mr. Alexander was born in Hanover, Germany, December 1, 1834. He came to this country at the age of fourteen, and took up his residence in Kenton, Ohio, where he remained twenty-two years, engaging in the grocery and meat market business. In 1870 he moved to Osceola and continued in the same business for many years. About six years ago he and his family moved to Omaha, since which Mr. Alexander has been a traveling salesman. He was married in Ohio December 1, 1856, to Miss Eleanor Winters. Twelve children were born to the union, of whom eight are living, namely; Mrs. John Conley, of Red Oak; Mrs. D. Webster and Mrs. John McDonough Jr., of Osceola; Mrs. Willging, of Dubuque; Mrs. Eiseman, of Versailles, Ohio; Mrs.M. J. Dasey, of South Omaha; Miss Daisy Alexander and Charley of this city. They with their bereaved mother were all present at the funeral, except Mesdames Eiseman and Dasey. Mr. Alexander was a soldier in the war of '61 and a member of the Osceola G. A. R. post and was also a member of the traveling men's association in Omaha. The funeral was held Wednesday. Rev. Stevenson delivered the sermon in the presence of a large crowd of sympathizing friends, after which the remains were interred in the Osceola cemetery, under ritual exercises by the G. A. R. Mr. Alexander was a kind husband and father. He worked hard all his life that he might give his children a good education. He bade his family all goodbye and said he felt prepared to go. He is still survived by his mother-in-law, who has made her home with him since his marriage. She is very low and expected to pass away at any moment.
