Services For Dr.
Eva Shively Sat.

Former Osceola Physician Died Suddenly
While On Visit Here
From Calif.

Services for Dr. Eva Shively were held from the Seventh Day Adventist church in Osceola Saturday afternoon. She died suddenly at the home of Mrs. Grace Miller Tuesday, June 27. Elder Jerry Smith officiated, with Webster's in charge. Interment was in Maple Hill cemetery.

The obituary follows:

Eva Adeline McGee was born three miles east of Osceola, Iowa on the family farm, January 1, 1870. She received her early education in the public schools of Clarke County.

When she was about seventeen years of age, she heard the gospel preached by Judson Washburn in the Seventh-day Adventist church at Osceola, Iowa. After studying the message that he brought from the Bible for about a year she with her mother, brother Harvey, and sister Rachel united with the Seventh-day Adventist church here. She continued a careful Bible student until the last. In her Bible were found two Sabbath school lesson quarterlies, one containing the lessons for the quarter which closed last Sabbath, and the other beginning with the lesson for today.

When she was eighteen she received a certificate to teach school. She first taught the Powell school. She won the respect and hearts of her pupils. She continued in this school for a number of terms. Desiring more adequate preparation for her work she attended Liberty Female Seminary at Liberty, Missouri a year. Then she continued her education at Union College, College View, Nebraska. After taking work there, she taught in the College View public schools for several years.

In 1897 she was married to Jay Dow Shively at Woodburn, Iowa. The following autumn they went to Battle Creek, Mich. that he might complete his medical course and that she might take a course in nursing.

Upon the completion of his course, they accepted positions in the Iowa Sanitarium, then located in Des Moines, he acting as medical superintendent and she as matron. After she had done this work for a year, she decided that it would be helpful for her to be a doctor, too. Consequently she took the medical course at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa.

After the completion of her course and a specialized course in eye, ear, nose and throat work, they were called to the Boulder, Colorado Sanitarium. Here again Dr. Dow Shively was the medical superintendent and Dr. Eva had her eye, ear, nose and throat work for a time and later was the lady physician.

Dr. Eva was always eager for more knowledge. While at Boulder by taking a small amount of work at the University of Colorado she was graduated from that institution with the B. A. degree.

After working six years at Boulder they were called to the Nebraska Sanitarium located at College View, Nebraska. Here Dr. Dow was medical superintendent and Dr. Eva was the lady physician.

From Nebraska they came back to Osceola and established the Osceola Sanitarium here. It was a real pleasure for Dr. Eva to work among her girlfriends here.

The past fifteen years she has been working in the schools of California as a teacher and physician. She gladly looked forward each year to returning to the old home town to spend her summer vacation. Two weeks ago she came from Corning, California. She seemed quite herself although she had not been too well the last year. She stated, "I want to live to see the Lord come, but I have had some trouble with my heart this year."

Monday afternoon she suddenly became ill, apparently from over-exhaustion on a warm day. She passed away June 27, 1944. Dr. Eva has always been an untiring worker and a diligent student.

She leaves to mourn one sister, Ruby Dell McGee, one sister-in-law, Ida E. McGee, one nephew, Dr. Harry E. McGee, two nieces, Mrs. Joe Barnes, nee Meda McGee and Mrs. Robert Laurin, nee Eva Bailey and many other relatives and friends.

She sleeps to await the Life Giver.
