Home In Osceola; Buried

One more of the old citizens from pioneer days has passed away, Jacob Shively was born March 4, 1840 near West Penn, Pennsylvania, and died at his home in Osceola, Iowa, August 22, 1932 at the age of 92 years, 5 months and 18 days.

The cause of death was pneumonia attended with the encumbrances of old age.

Mr. Shively's great grandfather was a member of that pioneer crew that came to America with William Penn, and settled near Philadelphia. Hence, Mr. Shively's early years were spent with his parents in Penn. Later the family moved to Iowa. As a farmer he cultivated the virgin soil of Iowa, and through his perseverance and industry his work was crowned with success.

March 28, 1867 he was united in marriage with Harriet Gibson of Clarke county, to whom seven children were born, five surviving, two sons, Dr. J. D. Shively and John E. Shively; and three daughters who reside in California, Dr. Ida S. Nelson, Mrs. Edith S. Halvorsen and Mrs. Suzie S. Nelson.

Mr. Shively was a kind husband, father and neighbor, highly esteemed by all who knew him. He died as he lived, fully believing in the Christian's hope and reward of right doing and practice of the golden rule.

He has left an enviable record of a long life well lived, of service and sacrifice, the memory of which is a precious heritage to his family and friends.

He leaves to mourn his beloved wife, two sons, three daughters, two brothers, three grandsons, and a large circle of friends.

Funeral services were held at the Osceola Christian church Wednesday p. m. Burial at Ottawa.
