Here for 19 Years

Funeral services for Dr. J. D. Shively, former Osceola physician and surgeon, were held Saturday at Clinton, Mo. Saturday. He was 78 years old. Burial was at Clinton.

Jay Dow Shively, son of Jacob and Harriet Shively was born September 12, 1869 on the Shively farm six miles east of Osceola which his father had homesteaded.

He attended the rural schools of the county and then entered Battle Creek college in 1888 where he was awarded his B. S. degree in 1894. He then entered the medical college at Battle Creek, Mich. affiliated with the university of Michigan, where he received his degree as doctor of medicine in 1900.

He entered private practice at Sheldahl, Iowa and after two years became medical superintendent of the Iowa Sanitarium at Nevada and later of the sanitarium at Boulder, Colo. where he remained six years.

In 1912 he became superintendent of the Nebraska Sanitarium at Lincoln where he acted in that capacity until 1919 when he came to Osceola. For the next 19 years he operated the Osceola Sanitarium and hospital, building the structure which now houses the Osceola hospital.

About 1938 he retired from active practice and moved to Clinton, Mo. the former home of his wife.

He loved his medical work for the good he could do in relieving the ills of humanity; loved his home and his family as well, never tiring of doing things that added to their pleasure and comfort.

He was married to Alfreda Hardt on September 3, 1928.

He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church from the days of his youth and always took active part in the church. Since 1941 he has been an elder of the church in Clinton.

Surviving are his wife; brother, J. D. Shively of Osceola; two sisters, Mrs Edith Halvorsen of St. Helena, Calif., and Mrs. W. E. Nelson of Washington, D. C.; three nephews, John D. Shively of Chariton, Dr. Ralph Halvorsen of Napa, Calif. and Dr. Paul J. Shively of San Francisco, as well as many more distant relatives and many friends.
