John Griffin (colored) died at his home, June 26th 1908. He was born in Kentucky, November 26th, 1839 and has lived in this region since the war.

He was quite a character around Osceola and almost everyone knew or knew of him. At the time of his death he was a widower, his wife having died some time ago and he had been living alone with his grandson Walter in their home in the north west part of town.

He was nearly seventy years of age and was afflicted with bright’s disease, these combining to bring about his death. Mr. Griffin was converted, a good many years ago and has been very religious up to the end including the tie of his death.

John Griffin (colored) died at his home in Osceola on June 26, 1908, aged sixty-nine years, and three months, after a long illness. He was born in Kentucky March 26, 1839, and came to Osceola about the beginning of the civil war and has resided here ever since.

He was one of the “characters” of the community, cheerful and full of wit and good humor, and many amusing anecdotes are based upon John Griffin’s ready wit.

He was the father of six children, all of whom with his wife have preceded him and the only relative left is his grandson, Walter, who lived with him and who had cared for him during his long illness.

The funeral services were held at the A.M.E. church Saturday, Rev. L.A. Joplin officiating.
