Jane Houston
Jane Houston, daughter of Earl Houston and Frances Sheesley Houston, was born Nov. 28, 1918 in Osceola, and died June 2, 2004, at her residence in Indianola. She was 85.

Ms. Houston graduated from Clarke County Schools and attended Cottey College in Nevada, MO. After college, she worked on a dude ranch in Arizona. She returned to Osceola and worked for her father who owned Kraft Clothing co. She was a secretary to the superintendent at Clarke County Schools before becoming employed at Clarke County State Bank in Osceola in 1956 where she worked as a cashier and retired as assistance vice president in 1989.

Ms. Houston suffered from arthritis, but insisted on walking to work every day. She lived in Osceola most of her life until moving to The Village in Indianola in 1995 to serve as a volunteer.

Ms. Houston traveled extensively, was an avid card player, and especially enjoyed cats. She was a member of Chapter K, PEO, since 1938. She was an active member of the Osceola United Presbyterian Church until she moved. She was a member of the Clarke County Historical Board. She served several year on the Osceola Pool Board and helped with the fund raising for a new city swimming pool in the late 70s and early 80s.

Ms. Houston was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her sister, Susan Green of Des Moines, nieces, Frances MacFarlane and husband, Don MacFarlane of Dallas, and Martha Green and husband, Jack Porter of Des Moines, nephew, Jeffrey Green of Des Moines, three great-nephews, and one great-niece, as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Ms. Houston were June 5 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola, the Rev. Philip Coe officiating.

Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola and arrangements were by kale Funeral Homes of Osceola and Truro.
