Funeral services for Enoch Saddoris, one of the county’s oldest pioneer residents, were held Thursday from the Trinity Methodist church. The Rev. Jay N. Waterman officiated with Websters Funeral Service in charge.

Enoch R. Saddoris, son of Henry and Margaret Kirby Saddoris, was born October 3, 1855 in Clarke county, six miles north of Osceola in a log cabin on the homestead that his parents had moved to in 1853.

He passed away Tuesday morning, April 13 at his home on West McLane street at the age of 92 years, 6 months and 9 days. He was the last of a family of 12 children. His death marks the passing of Clarke county’s oldest couple. Mrs. Saddoris preceded her husband in death just three months to a day.

Mr. Saddoris was united in marriage to Diann Margaret Rushing on Sept. 7, 1878. Six children were born to this union, five sons and one daughter, two sons preceded them in death. He had spent his entire life in Clarke county, and was out of the state but once, when he was visiting his daughter in Davenport, he made a trip across the river into Illinois.

Many were the hardships endured by this pioneer family. In one instance there were no matches or flint and his father went 4 miles to Wm. Farley’s to borrow a kettle of fire before the family could have breakfast.

Mr. Saddoris moved from a farm to Osceola about 35 years ago. Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Charles, Fred and Leonard of Osceola, and his daughter Mrs. Vena Beresford of Davenport, Iowa, 14 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Music for the service was supplied by Andy B. Jeffries, Mrs. Floyd McComas and Mrs. Jay Waterman, accompanied by Mrs. Zula Painter. Burial was in Maple Hill cemetery.
