William Riley Sanders, son of Riley and Susannah Sanders, was born in Knox township, Clarke county, Iowa, March 1, 1859; died on the same farm January 23, 1901. With the exception of about one year, his whole life was spent in this vicinity, where by his strict integrity and courteous treatment he won a large number of friends. All who became acquainted with him held him in the very highest esteem.

His father, a most exemplary Christian man, died in 1860 at the early age of thirty-seven years. His mother died in 1893, at seventy-three years. His stepfather is now living in Osceola. Mr. Sanders has one brother and one sister and lost one brother in November, 1881. He also has two half sisters and one half brother.

November 28, 1883, he was married to Miss Eva Linder. To them were born four children - three boys and one girl. The twin boys born October 1892, are both dead, Karl dying February 15, 1893 and Merlyn February 14, 1894.

William Sanders was never a very robust man but being very energetic and ambitious he often worked beyond his strength. His health failing him about a year ago he took a trip to Wyoming, but received very little benefit therefrom. Gradually declining in health and at times suffering intensely, though never complaining, he quietly passed away at an early hour Wednesday morning, January 23rd, surrounded by his devoted family, aged forth-one years ten months and twenty-two days.

He leaves an affectionate wife, a daughter of sixteen years and a son of fourteen years, to mourn their loss. The funeral was held at his late home in Knox township, 2 and one half miles northwest of Lacelle, Thursday afternoon, January 24th, conducted by Rev. F. E. Pelton, pastor of the Baptist church, Murray, and was attended by a very large number of friends and acquaintances.
