LEORA HARRIET LOOMIS

Leora Harriet Hays Loomis, daughter of Margaret Amelia Umland Hays and Mondel E. Hays was born September 21, 1910, in Crawford County and died Oct. 16, 1999, at the Mitchellville Village Care Center, Mitchellville. She was 89.

She moved with her family to Clarke County when she was five.

She married Cecil Ivor Loomis on Oct. 18, 1933, and the couple became the parents of a daughter. The family farmed in the Truro, Osceola area until 1950 when they moved into Osceola and later moved to Des Moines.

Mrs. Loomis was an avid gardener and liked to cook. She worked at Warren Harding Junior High School in Des Moines for 17 years as the "Baker." She always had cookies on hand for the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Cecil in 1993, five brothers, Gilbert, Roscoe, George, Sears and Chester; two sisters, Maxine Devol and Almarine Mateer; three nieces; a great-granddaughter, Melissa Johnston and a grandson-in-law, Ben Bass.

Mrs. Loomis is survived by her daughter, Delores Johnston and her husband, Bob Johnston, of Altoona; six grandchildren, Cathy Churchill and her husband, Ted Churchill of Mitchellville, Barbara Bass of Johnston, Mike Johnston and his wife, Cathy Johnston, Karen Brewer, Nancy Hopper and her husband, Tim Hopper and Tom Johnston and his wife, Joy Johnston, all of Altoona; 14 great-grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.

Services for Mrs. Loomis were Oct. 19 at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, the Rev. Neville Clayton officiating.
