Tressie Brown
Tressie Mae Brown, daughter of Asa and Margaret Ellen Ramsey West, was born May 5, 1920, on the family farm southwest of Lacelle. She died Aug. 13, 2003, at the Clarke County Hospital Extended Care Unit in Osceola. She was 83.

Mrs. Brown grew up attending the Brushwood country school in Clarke County and graduated from Grand River High School in 1938. She married W. H. “Bill” Brown at the United Methoidst Church in Leon. The couple became the parents of two children, Merrill and Louise.

Mr. and Mrs. Brown spent their entire married life farming within a few miles of her childhood home. In later years she worked as an inspector for the Snowdon Company in Osceola. She retired from Snowdons after 19 years in 1974.

Following her husband’s death in 1974 Mrs. Brown remained on the farm until 1976 when she moved to a home near the high school in Osceola. She gave up her home in 2001 and moved to Casual Living in Osceola where she lived until June of 2002 when her health required her to move to the Extended Care Unit of the Clarke County Hospital. Mrs. Brown was a member of the Mount Zion Christian Church which was near the family farm. She was also a member of the Osceola Eagles Lodge Aerie No. 3495. She enjoyed her garden, strawberry beds, truck patch, flowers and raising chickens. However, some of her greatest moments were spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren at family gatherings and dinners.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1974; a sister, Opal West; a brother, Burton West; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Snyder is survived by her son, Merrill Brown and companion, Joyce Snyder, of Grimes; her daughter, Louise Halls and her husband, Jim Halls, of Osceola; six grandchilden, Darrin Brown of Grimes, Chris Brown of Winterset, Ted Halls of Murray, Patty Crain of Hartford, Denny Halls of Osceola and Montey Halls of Bloomfield; 14 great-grandchildren; a cousin, Dale West of Grand River; as well as other relatives and a host of friends.

Services for Mrs. Brown were Aug. 15 at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, Pastor Marty Burgus of Osceola officiating. Organist was Virginia Reynolds. Vocalist Ronda Lowry sang Precious Memories and Just a Closer Walk With Thee.
Casket bearers were Darrin Brown, Chris Brown, Ted Halls, Denny Halls, Montey Halls and L.D. Crain. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery at Osceola.

Kale Funeral Home of Osceola assisted the family with arrangements.
