The History of Howard and Chickasaw Counties says that a group of white men "staid" for a summer in 1850, but that Truman Merritt should be considered the first white settler, because he came in 1848 with his family with the intent to stay.

The 1854 Census lists 87 families, and 450 individuals as county residents, but it does not include Mr. Merritt. Censuses and historians can both be wrong, but perhaps one or more of these 87 families should be considered the original settlers, whose ranks grew to 4,336 by 1860.

At the very least, they should be candidates for consideration as "pioneer families".
