John A. Gordon
At his home in Jacksonville Township Monday evening June 27, 1904, John A. Gordon in the 42nd year of his age. The subject of this brief sketch was born in Dane County, Wisconsin Nov. 10, 1862 and came to Iowa with his parents in 1868 and here he has lived ever since. June 3rd 1886 he married Miss Betsy Ellingson and three children came to bless the home: Carrie, Andrew and Edward, the last one died in infancy and others were at home at the time of their father’s death. Mr. Gordon lost his wife and after a time again married choosing Miss Belle Tronson who survives him. Six children came as the fruit of this union and they are all at home with the stricken mother.
Mr. Gordon has been subject to severe headaches and dizziness for some time, but not anything to excite alarm. About one week ago he got onto a horse and went to help his son drive some cattle, the horse he was riding was seen to shy a little and Mr. Gordon fell off and was unconscious for some time. Dr. A. H. Wight was called and after a time the sufferer was restored to consciousness and up to Monday evening he appeared to be making rapid progress towards complete recovery. Only a few minutes before being stricken down he was conversing with his wife and congratulating himself on his speedy recovery from the effects of the fall. On the Saturday previous he was visited by his physician and they visited for some time and Mr. Gordon did not think it necessary for the doctor to come again until Tuesday and not then if he continued to gain which he was to let the doctor know by phone. When the doctor was called Monday evening he found Mr. Gordon suffering from apoplexy and he passed away at 10:30 that evening without have regained consciousness.
When the friends became aware of the seriousness of the case at the suggestion of the attending physician they telephoned for Dr. I. K. Gardner who responded immediately and made a swift drive to the home of the then suffering man, but before he arrived Mr. Gordon had passed from the scenes of earth to the rewards of the just. Mr. Gordon was very well known in this part of the country and was a man much esteemed both at home and in this city where he did his trading. He was a man of the strictest integrity, kind and loving in his family, and accommodating neighbor and good friend. His habits were of the best and his life was without concegiments, frank and fearless for the right he lived, loved, planned and labored for his family. He leaves an aged father and mother, a wife and eight children and a sister, Mrs. George Otteson to mourn the sudden and unexpected death of their loved kinsman, son, husband, father and brother. The funeral was from the home, Thursday, June 30, 1904, at 11 o’clock a.m. and the body was laid to rest in the bosom of mother earth.
