Killed by the Cars.
Sam Jacobson, an aged Hebrew who has worked for some time for Joe Block was struck by the afternoon east bound freight while crossing the track near Ridgeway on Friday last, and injured so badly that he died about five o’clock on the afternoon of the day following. The old man was driving into Ridgeway and was approaching the crossing at the high grade about two miles this side of that place when he was seen by the train crew who whistled loudly to warn him and tried to stop the train which was hard to do on on{sic} account of the down grade there. When Jacobson saw the train, instead of stopping he whipped up the team and tried to cross the track, and just as the team cleared the track the wagon was struck by the engine and dragged along the track unit was reduced to kindling wood. Both horses were rolled clear to the fence but were not injured except a few scratches. The old man was picked up unconscious and taken into Ridgeway. It was found that he was injured beyond the posibility of recovery. Four fractures had been sustained, two of the leg, his arm and his collar bone, all on the right side. He was brought to Cresco on Saturday and taken to Joe Block's where he died without regaining consciousness. The remains were taken to New Hampton for burial.
The old man came to this country about seven years ago, most of which time has been spent in this vicinity.
He leaves a wife residing in the old home in Russia, and two daughters, one at Dubuque and one at Philadelphia, all of whom are reported to be in poor circumstances. His son-in-law from Dubuque was with him at the time of his death.
