LAWLER - Gunilda M. Benz, 87, rural Lawler, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural causes.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 at Saude Evangelical Lutheran Church in Saude with Rev. Kent Dethlef-sen officiating. Mary Beth Dethlefsen was organist, accompanying those in attendance singing "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”, "Rock of Ages" and "Abide With Me”.

Burial was in the church cemetery with Paul Swenum-son, Don Anderson, Rick Johnson, Don Benz, Mike Webster, Allan Natvig, Mark Natvig and Oakleigh Natvig serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers were Godfrey Natvig, Bob Webster and Harris Vaala.

Visitation was after 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27 at Conway uneral Home in New Hampton and also an hour prior to services at the church.

Gunilda M. Treider was born Oct. 14, 1913 near Lawler, the daughter of Christian and Clara (Steensland) Treider. She attended country school near her home and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1933. Gunilda went on to attend Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls where she earned her teaching certificate and then taught school in the Lawler area. Gunilda obtained the Iowa State Normal Training Certificate in 1939. She was united in marriage with Kenneth Benz on June 19, 1941 at the Saude Lutheran Church. The couple resided in the rural Lawler area all of their married life. Over the years she has also sold Fuller Brush Products and cleaned houses and office buildings. She was a life-long member of the Saude Evangelical Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid.

Surviving are a daughter, Colleen (Doug) Breza, Anchorage, AK; a son, Larry Benz, Lawler; a grandaughter, Dawn (Michael) Donegan, Anchorage, AK; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Michelle Donegan.

Preceding her in death were her parents and husband, Kenneth on Oct. 5, 1970.
