FREDERICKSBURG -- James L. Woods, 76, Fredericksburg, died Sunday morning, July 9 at his home after a short illness.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 12 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg with Pastor Ronnie Koch officiating. Karen Downes was organist, with hymn selections being "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" and "Eternal Father Strong To Save". Shelley Mohling and Faye Elliott provided special music of "Angels Among Us" and "In The Garden".
Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg, with graveside military rites conducted by Fredericksburg AM VETS Post #90. Casket bearers were Calvin Marquis, Ron McGill, Fred Riesner, Phil Moser, Steve Pates and Dean Milius;
Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 11 at Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home in Fredericksburg and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
James L. Woods was born Oct. 2, 1923 at Frederika, the son of James L. and Iva Mae (Adams) Woods. Jim was born seven months after his father's death and at the age of three, Jim and three sisters were taken to the Lutheran Children’s Home in Waverly to be raised. He received his education at the Lutheran Parochial School there and was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. His brother, Harold was raised in Indianapolis at the Indiana Deaf School. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps, served four years with the U. S. Navy during World War II and spent 38 years as a seaman, working up to cook/baker in the Merchant Marines, retiring in 1984. On April 15, 1961, Jim was united in marriage with Maria do Carmo do Silva of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil.
Surviving are his wife, Maria Woods, Fredericksburg; one son, James L. Woods III, Fredericksburg; one daughter, Ceu (Sally) Erion and her fiance, Dean Liddle, New Hampton; Jo Ann Ruth, Minnesota; 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Govig, Illinois and Dorothy Osterman, Charles City.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Helen Marquis; two brothers, Harold and Ora Woods; and extended family Martin and Bertha Ruth.
