NEW HAMPTON ~ Velma Wilson, 97, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000 at the New Hampton Care Center of natural causes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, New Hampton with Rev. Carl Schmitt celebrating the mass. Music for the service will be provided by Sr. Lorraine Loecher as organist and Dorothy Carlin as cantor. Florence Throndson will be lector. The pall will be placed on the casket by her nieces, Carole O'Byrne, Jeanne Heit and Patricia McCullen.

Burial will be in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Lawler with Gerald Heit, Lou Kellner, Jim Kotoske, Michael Stratton, Jim Kellner and Mike O'Byrne as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12 at Larkin-Martin-Hugeback Funeral Home, New Hampton where, there will be a 4 p.m. Rosary, a 6:30 p.m. Scripture Service and a 7 p.m. Memorial Tribute. Further visitation is an hour prior to the funeral at the church.

Velma was born on a farm near Lawler on Sept. 3, 1903 the daughter of Mike and Theresa (Rooney) O'Byrne. She attended school in Lawler and graduated from the Lawler High School in 1921. She attended the Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls and taught for many years in the Fredericksburg and Elma areas. Velma then became Director for Welfare in Des Moines and a social worker in 1944 where she worked with the blind in Des Moines and surrounding counties. In 1954 she married Dr. Frank B. Wilson and resided with him in Guthrie Center. After the death of her husband, Velma moved back to Des Moines and worked part-time at the Des Moines Blank Children's Hospital. In 1975 she retired and moved to New Hampton to be near her family. Memberships included St. Joseph Catholic Church and Rosary Society. Velma enjoyed playing bridge, sewing clothes for family members and attending family gatherings.

Survivors include two sisers, Lois O'Holleran, Oxford and Darlene Hohman, Lincoln, NE; a sister-in-law, Ethel O'Byrne, New Hampton; five nieces; two nephews and several great nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; three brothers, Frank, Merle and Virgil O'Byrne; four sisters, Margaret Cooney, Cleo Stratton, Lucian (Sr. Borgia) O'Byrne and Helen O'Byrne and one nephew, Bob Stratton.
