FREDERICKSBURG -- Bernard D. Wenthe, 74, Fredericksburg, died Sunday morning, March 5 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo of complications of a heart attack suffered at his home Friday evening.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 7 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg.

Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg.

Visitation was 4-8 p.m. Monday, March 6 at Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home in Fredericksburg.

Bernard Dale Wenthe, son of Christian and Blanche (Olander) Wenthe, was born May 14, 1925 at Fredericksburg. He was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg on May 4, 1930 and was confirmed at St. Paul's on Aug. 13,1939. He graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1942. On Feb. 6, 1945, Bernard was united in marriage with Vivian Leach. He farmed for a period of time after high school and then worked at the Eclipse Lumber Yard until he became employed at the First State Bank in 1956. He worked as cashier at the bank for 28 years, retiring in 1984. Bernard was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Chickasaw County Bankers Association, served as treasurer of the Fredericksburg Schools for 33 years and served as secretary of the Dairy Day Association for 20 years.

Surviving are his wife, Vivian; five children, Diana (Dan) Suplita, Fairmont, WV, Rev. Claudia (Rev. Fred) Tessmer, Hudson, Craig (Connie) Wenthe, Fredericksburg, Mark (Terry) Wenthe, Altoona, and Linda Bowers, Johnston; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, James Wenthe, Riverside, CA and Kenneth Wenthe, Waterloo.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Christian (1972) and Blanche (1990); three brothers, LaVem(1920), Claude (killed in WWII in 1944), Harold (1972); a sister, Evelyn VonDoehren (1998).

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Mr. Wenthe's name.
