IONIA - Edward J. Welter, 88, passed away Thursday morning, an. 20 at his rural Ionia home.
There will be no funeral services or memorial services for Ed as he donated his body to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Edward was born on a farm west of Rutland on Feb. 26, 1911, the son of Nicholas Celestin and Mary (Ries) Welter. He attended school in the Bradget area and later worked at a variety of jobs, including installation of coal stoker furnaces and farming.
He was united in marriage to Gladys (Tellier) Sinclair on Nov. 28, 1942. They farmed near Livermore until 1952 when they moved to their farm near Ionia. He farmed and worked in carpentry until retiring in 1974.
In the mid-60s, Ed began working with the State Forestry Department and local Conservation Commission, planting some 20,000 pine, larch and hardwood trees and maintaining 108 acres of native timber. In 1976 he was the district winner for the Woodland Owner of the Year award and two years later Ed was named Outstanding Tree Farmer for the state of Iowa. Ed enjoyed woodworking, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include four children, Sylvia Welter, Ionia, Allen Sinclair, Livermore, Bruce Sinclair, Wapello and Delia Black, Vancouver, WA; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Gladys, in 1996; one grandson, Steven Black; his parents; six brothers, Nick, Emil, Frank, Pete, Charlie and Henry; and two sisters, Katherine Welter and Mary Lovig.
