FREDERICKSBURG

Erna Steege, 90, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 26, 2000 at her rural Fredericksburg home of natural causes.

Memorial services were held Thursday, Sept. 28 at 10:30 a.m. at Peace United Church of Christ, Fredericksburg, with Pastor Joan Fumetti officiating. Yvonne Lienau was organist. Hymn selections included "What a Friend We Have In Jesus", "Nearer My God To Thee" and "Rock Of Ages"..

Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg, prior to the memorial services.

There was no visitation. Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home, Fredericksburg, was in charge of arrangements.

Erna was born Feb. 18,1910 on a farm four miles west of Readlyn, the daughter of Herman and Carolina (Boeckman) Westendorf. They later moved to Waverly and she graduated from Waverly High School in 1929. Erna taught in country school in Warren #8 in Bremer County in 1930 and 1931. Erna married Laurence C. Steege on June 4, 1931 at Peace United Church of Christ in Fredericksburg with Rev. Walter Koch officiating. They farmed in the Fredericksburg area, retiring in 1973. Erna remained on the farm after her husband's death. She was a member of peace U.C.C. and Women's Fellowship in Fredericksburg.

Surviving are three sons, Larry (Verla), Marlowe and Vern Steege, all of Fredericksburg; one daughter, Carol (Michael) Wertz, Hanlontown; a daughter-in-law, Wanda Steege, Baker, OR; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Laurence on April 8, 1986; a son, John Steege on April 11, 1998; three sisters, Ada Hartman, Elda Sassmann and Esther Buis.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
