NEW HAMPTON - Catherine M. Schwickerath, 97, New Hampton, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000 at the New Hampton Care Center of natural causes.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 19 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, New Hampton with Rev. Carl Schmitt celebrating the mass. The pall was placed on the casket by her six children. Lector for the service was Karen Schwickerath and grandchildren presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by Ann Bennett as organist; David Carlin and Michele Sailstad as cantors.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton witn Shawn Schwickerath, Terry Schwickerath, David Sullivan, Steven Carlin, Don Sullivan and Jim Coleman as pallbearers.

Visitation was Monday, Sept. 18 from 3-9 p.m. at Larkin-Martin-Hugeback Funeral Home, New Hampton where there was a 4 p.m. rosary, a 7 p.m. scripture service and a 7:30 p.m. memorial tribute.

Catherine was bom April 13, 1903 in rural Chickasaw County, the daughter of James and Mary (Brennan) Coleman.

She attended rural country school and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School in North Washington. On Feb. 8, 1926 at Immaculate Conception Church, North Washington, she married Leo M. Schwickerath. The couple initially lived and farmed in Story County for about ten years before moving to North Washington. Catherine and Leo lived and farmed near North Washington until retiring in 1964. Leo died on July 27, 1969 at which time Catherine moved to New Hampton. Catherine died at the New Hampton Care Center where she had been a resident for many years. Gardening, playing cards, games with her grandchildren, bingo and crocheting were some of the activities that Catherine enjoyed.

Survivors include three sons, Francis Schwickerath, Nevada and Donald Schwickerath (Donna) and Merle Schwickerath (Karen), both of New Hampton; three daughters, Marianne Mashek (Don), Lawler; Kathleen Sullivan (Don), Charles City; Dorothy Carlin (Mike), New Hampton; 16 grandchildren and 23 greatgrandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Leo; four brothers, John, Frank, Leonard and Maurice Coleman and two sisters, Mary Drewelow and Ellen Coleman and a grandson, Jason Schwickerath in 1978.
