Obituary for Duane "Dewey" Leichtman
Duane "Dewey" Leichtman, age 90, of New Hampton, IA, passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2017 at Linn Haven Rehab and Healthcare in New Hampton.

Funeral Services for Dewey will be at 10:30 AM on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton, Iowa with Pastor Kevin Frey officiating. Burial will be held at New Hampton Cemetery in New Hampton with the New Hampton American Legion providing military honors.

Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 PM on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton and will continue at the church one hour prior to the funeral service on Thursday. Duane Clem Leichtman was born on June 20, 1926 to Clem and Alice (Eggleston) Leichtman in New Hampton, Iowa. He attended and graduated from New Hampton High School. Upon graduating, Dewey began what would be a lifelong career in farming which was briefly interrupted in 1952 when Dewey enlisted in the United States Army. After receiving his honorable discharge, Dewey returned home and to farming. On June 17, 1972, Dewey was united in marriage to his beloved wife, Regina. He lovingly accepted her six children. The couple made their home on the Leichtman century farm until they retired to New Hampton in 1995.

Dewey enjoyed farming and helping his nephews with tiling. He especially enjoyed his mornings with “the coffee crew” and Sunday excursions. He was a 60 year member of the American Legion and served on the board of directors for Farmer’s Co-op and REC.

Dewey is survived by five step-children, Claude (Nancy) Babcock of Lawler, Steve (Shirley) Babcock of New Hampton, Rosemary (Dennis) Carpenter of North Washington, Mike (Kathy) Babcock of New Hampton, and Kate (Dick) Schmidtke of Grain Valley, MO; 18 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Francis (Eleanor) Martin of New Hampton and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife, Regina in 2009; stepson, Philip Babcock; granddaughter, Michelle Thrasher; great-granddaughter, Magdaline Dietzenbach and three brothers, Lloyd (Marie) Leichtman, Kenneth (Doris) Leichtman and Vernon (Darlene) Leichtman.
