NEW HAMPTON -Richard J. O'Brien, 78, New Hampton, died Wednesday, May 31 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes.

Funeral services are 3 p.m. Friday, June 2 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, New Hampton, with Rev. Carl Schmitt as celebrant. The pall will be placed on the casket by his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. Lector will be Paul Krueger and offertory gifts will be presented by Erin and David O'Brien.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton, witn military rites conducted by the Fae Stine American Legion Post #38. Pallbearers are Tom Speltz, Dave Speltz, Ron Speltz, Paul Krueger, Rich Gansen and Tim Denner.

Visitation was 4-8 p.m. Thursday, June 1 at Larkin-Martin-Hugeback Funeral Home, New Hampton, with a 7 p.m. Parish Scripture Service, and also an hour prior to services at the church.

Richard was born Feb. 17, 1922 in Minneapolis, MN, the son of William and Genevieve (Barnett) O'Brien. At an early age the family moved to New Hampton following the accidental death of his father. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School and graduated in 1941 from New Hampton High School. Shortly after graduation, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. He was employed for 30 years at the former Oliver Tractor Corp. in Charles City, retiring in 1974. He was a member of the American Legion and St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include one son, Mike (Nancy) O'Brien, Rochester, MN; three grandchildren, Casey, David and Erin O'Brien; two sisters, Vonnie (Gordon) Speltz, New Hampton and Betty Gillis, Old Mystic, CT.

Preceding him in death were his parents.
