NEW HAMPTON - Randy K. Ovel, 48, Racine, WI, died Saturday, Jan. 15 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee of a brain aneurysm.

Funeral services were 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19 at Grace Church in Racine.

Visitation was from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18 at Hanson Funeral Home in Racine and also an hour prior to services at the church.

A Scripture Service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20 at Conway Funeral Home in New Hampton with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating. Organist was Gerald Bailey, accompanying Peter and Phyllis Willadsen as they sang "Beyond The Sunset". Those in attendance sang "Amazing Grace" and "For The Beauty Of The Earth”.

Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Hampton, with Jeff, Kevin and Dan Ovel, Stan VanWyk and Dean and Don Theis serving as casket bearers.

Visitation was from noon until service time Thursday at the funeral home in New Hampton.

Randy Kent Ovel was born Dec. 21, 1951 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Walter and Pauline (Theis) Ovel. He graduated from New Hampton High School in 1969 and the University of Iowa in 1973 with his B.A. in Criminology. He married Janet Spellmeyer on Oct. 6, 1973 in Eagle Grove. After their marriage, tne couple resided in West Union where he served the Fayette and Chickasaw county areas as a Juvenile Probation Officer. In 1976 he moved back to New Hampton to help establish Ovel Forest Products and at the same time attended the University of Northern Iowa where he received his Masters in Family Counseling. The couple then moved to Fort Dodge where he was employed as an in-home family therapist with Iowa Children and Family Services. In 1987 he moved to Racine, WI where he became the Director of the Children's Service Society of Wisconsin in Kenosha.

He was a member of Grace Church in Racine, served as the Board President of Kiwanis Youth Symphony, was a member of the Kiwanis Club and Belle City Stamp Club. Randy was also involved in Grace Churcn small group and volunteered at many church youth activities in Fort Dodge and Racine. He enjoyed fishing, football, snow skiing, and especially enjoyed working with children in need and the times he spent with family.

Surviving are his wife, Janet, Racine, WI; two daughters, Jessica and Kristin, Racine, WI; parents, Walter and Pauline Ovel, New Hampton; mother-in-law, Jeanne Spellmeyer, Eagle Grove; one sister, Nancy (Stan) VanWyk, Marshalltown; three brothers, Dan (Kim) and Kevin, New Hampton, Jeff (Darce), Chatfield, MN; grandmother, Regina Theis, Osage; sister-in-law, Beverly (Bob) McIntyre, Schaumburg, IL; nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his father-in-law, Vernon Spellmeyer; maternal grandfather, Francis Theis; paternal grandparents, George and Emma Ovel.
