ALTA VISTA - Robert O. Kittelson, 59, Alta Vista, formerly of Charles City and Pleasant Dale, NE, died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack Saturday, May 6 while fishing near Pleasant Dale.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 11 at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, Charles City, with Rev. Pete Peterson, Pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, Alta Vista, officiating.

Burial was in Sunnyside Memorial Gardens, rural Charles City, with graveside military honors conducted by the Paul Johann VFW Post #4069 of Elma.

Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 10 at the funeral home, with a 7 p.m. Prayer Service and also from 9 a.m. until service time on Thursday.

Robert Orland Kittelson was born Sept. 30, 1940 in Postville, the son of Orlando Kenneth (O.K.) and Irene Bessie (Sullivan) Kittelson. He moved with his family to Charles City where he graduated from Charles City Community High School in 1958. He married Janice K. Jones and they were later divorced. He then married Marlene K. Keller and they were later divorced.

Bob entered the United States Navy on Jan. 7, 1959. He became a submarine engineer, serving during the Vietnam War. He also served as a Navy Recruiter. A career Navy man, Bob was honorably discharged on Jan. 23, 1979, having attained the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. He then worked for Duncan Aviation as the Arpac Supervisor. He moved to Alta Vista in 1996 and was self-employed as a handyman and also worked for Tolliver Parts Supply.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was the Finance Officer of the American Legion Post #0597, both in Alta Vista; held life memberships in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Sub Vets of the U.S., Retired Enlisted Association and National Rifle Association. Bob was a history buff, enjoyed fishing, traveling, woodworking, his handyman work and especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his mother, Irene Kittelson, Charles City; his children, Michael Kittelson and Karla McKenzie, both of Cedar Falls, Kerri Kittelson, Waverly, Kristian (Jan) Kittelson, Parkersburg; stepchildren, Debra (Rob) Armstrong, Kearney, NE, John Griffith, Lincoln, NE, Tricia (Mark) Nieman, Pleasant Dale, NE; 11 grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Ann (Gary) Tolliver, Alta Vista, Doris (Walter) Nurre, Cedar Rapids; a brother, William (Jean Ann) Kittelson, Plaistow, NH.

Preceding him in death were his father; twin sons, Eric and Eron Kittelson; grandsons, Kent and Keith Kittelson; a brother, Larry Kittelson.

Memorials may be directed to the Robert O. Kittelson Scholarship Fund to be established for the graduates of Charles City Community High School.
